Alternate Workstation Locking

Friday, April 30th, 2004

I am a creature of habit. With the type of data I have on my computer, such as passwords to everything, I tend to lock my workstation whenever I leave. Typically this is a Ctl-Alt-Del and then enter. Today I saw a great little tidbit in the LockerGnome Newsfeed. To make this quicker, simply create a shortcut (I put it in my quick-launch toolbar) with the following path:

drive:\Windows\System32\ rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

“drive:” obviously has to be the drive your Windows folder is on and after user32.dll that is a comma not a period.

I know this will work in 2003, XP, and 2000, but I’m not sure about NT.

AD&D Session – 04/04/24

– Session Recap –
Much time is used discussing strategies to destroy the orb. The party does not want a recap of the battle with the Queen. Scrying on the dragon and teleporting inside the volcano is ruled out due to the low probability of scrying success. Methkarten flying into the volcano, or Vystal changing into a bird and flying into the volcano are also ruled out since the red dragon would surely see them and destroy them without the rest of the party. The party finally decides to do some standard dungeon crawling and heads straight for the visible entrance. Once inside, the party finds a magical wall at a t-junction and every wall, floor, and ceiling covered in bronze. The party concludes that the bronze is used to shield the inhabitants from the volcanic heat. As the party finds out, there is a continual 5-points of damage each round inside a bronzed area and 10-points of damage elsewhere. All of the party members had resist energy cast upon them or were wearing an item that resists energy, thus this damage is of little consequence. Quickly, battle looms when a fire dwarf rounds a corner headed for the party at a run. Right on his heels is a fire giant. The party’s first instinct is to attack both, but a rare side of caution is seen when Avriyael steps up and fires a single manyshot (3 arrows in a single attack) towards the fire giant. It was quickly obvious, as the fire dwarf runs past the group, the fire giant was the enemy and not the fire dwarf. After the party makes quick work of defeating the fire giant, the fire dwarf informs them of the location of other giants and the dragon within the volcano as well as how to get to the dragon. The party needed an amulet of the six-fingered cult. With this knowledge, and some help from the fire dwarf, the party is able to defeat a giant with an amulet and enter the central corridor (previously barred by the magic wall). As the fire dwarf informed us, there would probably be giant guards, and there were. After quickly dispatching the guards, the party continues forward. Proving that he is great with spotting, Quarrion is the only member of the party to see a small green thing (as we find out…an imp) scuttle through the air ahead down the corridor. As the party pursues, an iron golem rounds the corridor and charges toward the party. After a VERY long battle…Not difficult, just long…The iron golem is destroyed. As a side note, you wouldn’t expect a golem to lose its balance too much…Well, in Quarion’s case you would be wrong. Quarion spent much of the battle tripping the golem, successfully. You can imagine the sound an iron golem makes when it falls on a bronze floor. It was like hitting a gong to announce the party was there. After the golem, the party continues forward to where the golem came from. They find what they believe to be the dragon’s lair, but there is no dragon to be found. Within the lair is a river of lava, just perfect to destroy the orb. The party figures a quick plan and charges into the lair. Quarion walks over the lava, with the help of an air walk spell, and drops the orb. As we all expected, the dragon bursts up through the lava with the orb in its mouth. He then spits it to the opposite corner of his lair. The party expected this to be a difficult battle, due to the unforseen difficulties from the last red dragon, but this red dragon is dispatched quickly and with little damage to the party. In the meantime, the party notices the orb picked up and moved by an invisible force. They all assume it was the little green imp. Quarion, with enhanced speed from a haste spell, quickly engages the invisible imp. With the dragon defeated, the imp had very little chance. The orb falls and rolls into the lava. The party quickly picks up all of the dragon’s treasure and searches for any secret locations. After a few minutes, they find the imp’s quarters and discover a spellbook. Hoping to find more, the party is dismayed to find the lava’s level rising. In order to save their lives, they decide to have Methkarten and Avriyael use teleport scrolls to return them outside the temple in Queenstown (**Side Note: I needed to roll a 6 to cast teleport from the scroll. I missed. I rolled only a 4. I decided using an action point would be good timing. The action point let me roll 2d6 and add one of the dice to my d20 roll. What did I get? a 1 and a 2. I was in luck. I needed a 6 and I got a 6 :-) ). Without even a few minutes to catch their thoughts, as soon as the party arrives at Queenstown, Parisha (A vampiric succubus that is the party’s nemesis) is waiting. She starts by saying, “So, you have destroyed the orb.” Normally the party is fairly docile and thinks before they act, but they have encountered Parisha long enough to realize they have no interest in hearing what she has to say. Thogar, without hesitation, throws his axe (The “Arm of Pelor”…An artifact this campaign centers around) and deals a square hit. Realizing we’re not interested in talking, Parisha quickly teleports away.

Lets get a little history first. I have been playing D&D for over 16 years. I have played all editions and am currently enjoying 3.5 with a DM who concentrates on balance in the rules. This means some extra rules will be brought in from supplements if he feels they are balanced. This has lead to some very…shall we say…interesting discussions :-) My current character is Avriyael. She is a High-Elf Archer. Specifically she is a 6th lvl fighter, 1st lvl wizard, 1st lvl exotic weapons master, & 4th lvl Arcane Archer. She is of noble blood and has followed the path of leadership (i.e. leadership feat). Her cohort is a 10th lvl cleric. Other characters it the group are:
Thogar: Ice Dwarf Paladin
Quarion: Grey Elf Monk, who is now a Saint.
Shawnie: Human Fighter
Methkarten: Human Wizard
Vystal: Gnome Druid

– Previous session recap –
In Queenstown, the town of the Fayrics and their enslaver (a female red dragon, as I will reference by “Queen”), the party enters a temple to recover the Orb of Geno-slavery. This orb had been used to enslave the entire race of Fayrics by the Queen. With fairly little difficulty, but a few encounters, the party is able to enter a large chamber. Unbeknownst to the party, this is the lair of the Queen. Unprepared for battle, the Queen (decked out in half-plate…Can you imagine a red dragon dressed in armor??? Well, thank you Draconomicon) nearly decimates the party. Methkarten is killed instantly by the red’s breath weapon. Most of the party also takes damage. Later in the battle, Quarion, as well as Vystal’s Dire Wolf, also dies from devistating physical attacks by the Queen. Knowing the party will not be able to survive a continued battle, Avriyael runs straight for the orb. With some luck, she is able to grab the orb and escape to the upper level of the temple. Most of the party is able to escape as well. With the Queen very ticked, and trying to break down the temple to get into the upper level, the party runs outside. As a huge flying shadow appears, fear turns to relief as a silver dragon, which had been summoned earlier by an ancient elven beacon activated by the party, arrives and flies the party to safety. With some bargaining, the party is able to convince the silver dragon to resurrect Methkarten. Unknown to the party somehow Quarion was also resurrected…This turns out to be Sainthood being bestowed upon him. After a few days of travel by Methkarten and Quarion, and some flying by the silver dragon, the party is reunited on a mountain top overlooking the entrance to a volcano (and a different red dragon’s lair). The orb must be destroyed by placing it in the volcano.

DestinyForge Opening Blog

Thursday, April 22nd, 2004

I want to open my blogging foray by talking about the work ethic in the United States. I want to talk about complainers vs. moochers vs. doers. I’m sure we have all seen the types I am talking about. There are definite grey areas between these three, and not everyone fits within these categories.

You have the complainers. They are the epitomy of “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.” They complain about everything. This doesn’t work right, that doesn’t work right, my computer isn’t fast enough, that hardware is too loud. They will find the most annoyingly minor things to complain about. And, since everyone dislikes listening to complaints, these minor little things become so blown out of proportion that they must be fixed to right the wrongs of the universe. Then you have moochers.

Moochers are pretty obvious…cough…SCO..cough…They are the ones that believe everyone else’s work is theirs. You have all levels of moochers. You have your management moochers, you know the ones…taking credit for their managees. Then you have the company moochers. These are entire companies that make livings off of mooching. This has become a HUGE problem. I see more headlines about this company sueing that company over patent infringement, it makes me sick. There are those people out there willing to fight the moochers, they are the doers.

The doers are a special breed. They get up in the morning. Troddle off to work. Sit down, read their email and work…Yes, that is what I said…WORK. They don’t complain all day…They do their own work, not claiming someone else’s work. I am in the IT industry, so I tend to side on the technical side of doers, but there are physical day-laborers that are also doers. There are doers from construction workers to bus drivers.

Now, why would I start my blogging with such a post? Well, I am sick and tired of the complainers and moochers. This country was founded by doers! As time goes on, more and more complainers and moochers are getting their way in the government. Freedoms are being taken away from the doers. I know many people from countries outside the US think all US citizens are complainers and moochers. We’re NOT!!! There are those of us still around that simply want to “DO”. We want to continue this country in its proud traditions. Next time you see a complainer or moocher, stand up, be vocal. Don’t let this great country die from being strangled from within.
